Streamlining Studio Space: Rosalind Guder’s Journey to Efficiency
Rosalind has been redefining her studio space, making it more efficient for her workflow and her clients’ experience. She has written about her transformation in her own words and wanted to share it with you. Here is her journey.
As someone who values streamlined, uncluttered, and efficient solutions, both aesthetically and functionally, I’ve always sought out the best equipment and workflows. I’ve experimented with various camera brands and lighting techniques and even invested in a ceiling rail system from Italy for my lights to eliminate the annoyance of tripping over light stands.
Discovering the Ultimate Backdrop Solution: TogDrop
When it comes to backdrops, I’ve tried numerous methods, but now I’ve discovered the ultimate solution for maximizing flexibility and space: TogDrop. This system, designed by photographers Elaine and Gary, is a game-changer. In my compact 17’ by 30’ studio, I can now fit five complete backdrop sets seamlessly.
You might wonder how this is possible. The secret lies in the ingeniously engineered modular components. To keep costs down, I repurposed metal strips from my local hardware store, installed them vertically on the walls, and used TogDrop’s robust vertical metal strip adaptors. These adaptors securely support various pole holders for hanging backdrops. TogDrop offers a range of pole holders to suit different needs, including single, dual, and versatile “corner bodies” that can be used creatively beyond just corners.

A word about the rods: Elaine mentioned a local Los Angeles company specializing in “pipe and drape.” I visited their industrial location, expecting fixed-length aluminum pipes. However, Revelation #1 came when I discovered the telescoping pipes that could be customized to any length on the fly. Moreover, the end caps of the pipes, which had little hooks, could be removed. This meant the rods could seamlessly telescope into each other, creating a flawless backdrop wall without gaps. Hallelujah!
Mastering Rim Lighting with TogDrop’s Vertical Metal Strip Adaptors
Let’s talk about the rim lights. My signature look features subtle rim lights that make the subject pop out against the background. TogDrop comes to the rescue again with their vertical metal strip adaptors, which hold light body holders for my rim lights. These lights can be positioned perfectly between the backdrops.

Elaine and Gary have been a joy to work with in designing my small studio. Streamlined, uncluttered, and efficient – that’s my TogDrop experience. I can’t wait to share a video of my entire setup!
